how much does digital marketing cost, piggy blank and calculator

The real cost of digital marketing (and why “it depends” isn’t a helpful answer)

Let’s get this out of the way: asking “How much does digital marketing cost?” is a lot like asking “How long is a piece of string?”

You can spend millions on digital marketing, but that’s not the reality for most small B2B service businesses. Our clients aren’t Fortune 500 companies with marketing teams the size of small towns. They’re consultants, agencies, and service providers trying to grow steadily without burning through cash.

So, here’s my take: digital marketing can cost as much as you want to spend, but it only works when it’s focused on your target audience and goals.

Think ROI, not expense

When small business owners ask, “How much should I spend on marketing?” they’re often asking the wrong question. The real question is: What’s the cost of doing nothing?

If your competitors are showing up on Google, your prospects are visiting their websites, not yours. If you’re invisible online, your most qualified leads will never even know you exist. That’s the quiet, hidden cost of inaction, and it’s far more expensive than a well-planned marketing investment.

The myth of doing it all

The biggest trap I see small business owners fall into is trying to do everything, from social media to SEO, ads, video, email, blogging, and influencer collabs. But, I promise, you don’t need to do all the things. You need to do the right things, in the right order.

For most businesses, that means starting with a clear strategy before spending a cent on tactics. If your website isn’t clear about what you do, who it’s for, and why anyone should care, there’s no point in driving traffic to it.

That’s why, at Brighter Messaging, we often start with a Marketing Roadmap—a strategy session that helps you stop guessing and start investing wisely.

Start with strategy, not software

A lot of small business owners come to me with similar versions of this story: “We signed up for HubSpot, paid for ads, and hired a freelancer to post on LinkedIn, but we’re still not getting leads.”

And then I ask: “Who’s your ideal customer?” “What is your value proposition to that audience?” Cue the awkward pause.

If you don’t know who you’re trying to reach or what problem you’re solving, your marketing tools are just expensive toys. Strategy isn’t glamorous, but it’s what turns random activity into actual results.

The minimum you should spend (and where)

If you’re a small B2B business looking for smart ways to spend, here’s how much your digital marketing could cost:

  • A solid website: Around $10,000 for a WordPress site that’s professional, speedy, and SEO-ready. Yes, you can do it cheaper, but you’ll probably end up rebuilding it later. (Learn more about the essential components of a small business website.)
  • Basic SEO setup: Plan for $300–$1,000/month if you hire help, or your own time learning the basics. It compounds over time, unlike ads.
  • Email marketing platform: Starting at around $15 per month, depending on your list size. Email is one of the highest ROI digital marketing activities, so sending regular emails is definitely something we recommend.
  • Content creation: If you’re outsourcing writing or design, expect $1000 per month minimum for quality, consistent output.

That’s not pocket change, I know, but it’s also far less than the cost of spinning your wheels for another year. If all of this sounds overwhelming, you might want to look into our digital marketing packages, where you’ll pay a set amount every month for regular marketing activities (guided by us) over the course of the year.

If your budget is tighter than that, your best bet isn’t to do everything yourself—it’s to get guidance. That’s exactly why we built our Marketing Mentorship program: a hands-on way to learn how to DIY your marketing without wasting time and money figuring it out from scratch.
